Player guide

Everything a player needs: your character, your campaign, your actions — on the web, from Discord, or with an AI assistant at your side.

Your account and characters

A free account gives you 5 characters and lets you join any number of campaigns — playing never needs a subscription. The guided builder walks you through five steps (type, descriptor, focus, abilities, finish), and the finished sheet lives at Characters: pools, damage track, recovery rolls, XP, equipment and cyphers are all live controls that save as you tap them. When the GM awards enough XP, the sheet offers tier advancement.

Joining a campaign

Two ways in: your GM shares an invite code you enter on the Campaigns page, or sends an email invitation whose link joins you after sign-in. Then assign one of your characters to the campaign and you're at the table.

Playing encounters on the web

Open the campaign's active encounter and you get the player view: the scene's objective and stakes, the participants and zones the GM has revealed, the party-visible clocks, revealed discoveries, and the action history. It updates live as the table plays.

The action composer is how you act: pick what you're doing (a task, an attack, one of your abilities, a recovery roll, moving to an adjacent zone, or helping another PC), choose an applicable skill straight from your sheet, add up to two assets, and decide how much Effort to spend. Preview first — the composer shows the difficulty easing, target number and pool costs before anything happens — then commit the roll. Costs, damage through Armor, effects and clocks apply in one step; nobody bookkeeps by hand. Helping a friend gives them a one-action asset; in social and exploration scenes your tasks automatically count as social or exploration tasks.

Answering prompts

Some things wait on you, and show up as cards on your player view:

  • Defense prompts. When an enemy attacks your character, you get a pending defense: pick a sheet skill and Effort, preview, and roll. On a failure the damage applies automatically — Armor first, then your pools and damage track.
  • GM intrusions. The classic XP trade: accept the complication for 2 XP (you can gift one of the two to another character) or refuse it and pay 1 XP.
  • Special-effect choices. A natural 19 or 20 offers a choice: take the bonus damage, or take the effect the table agreed on. The turn waits until you decide.

Playing from Discord

Run /sheetwright link in any server with the bot, open the magic link, and your Discord is connected to your Sheetwright account — once, for every server. Then pick your character with /sheetwright character.

Command What it does
sheet Your character sheet — with buttons for any prompt waiting on you
roll · task · attack Dice, Cypher tasks with skill/assets/Effort, and attacks in the encounter
initiative · defend · help · move Roll initiative, answer a defense prompt, grant an asset, change zones
pool · recover · xp · cypher · abilities · use Sheet upkeep: pools, recovery rolls, XP, cyphers and abilities
encounter status · clock status Where the scene and the party's clocks stand — spoiler-free
intrusion accept / decline · rewards list / claim Answer the intrusion waiting on you; browse and claim staged loot

Your action results post as table-safe summaries the whole channel can see; status, list and claim replies stay private to you. Defense prompts come with [Roll defense] and [With Effort…] buttons, and a natural 19/20 damage option gets a [Take +damage] button — choosing an effect instead happens on the web via the link in the reply.

Playing by post

If your table plays asynchronously in a Discord thread, Sheetwright keeps you oriented between posts:

  • Turn on your pings. /sheetwright notifications state:on (or the toggle on your account page) DMs you when it's your move, when a handout or intrusion arrives, and when loot drops. Strictly opt-in and off by default — nothing ever posts to a shared channel.
  • "Whose move is it?" Your campaign's handouts page lists every open scene the GM tracks, who it waits on, and which Discord thread it lives in — the first thing to check after days away.
  • Roll where you post. task, attack and roll work straight from the story thread; results land in the shared dice log. Prompts wait for you — a pending defense or intrusion sits with buttons on /sheetwright sheet until you answer, whether that's in five minutes or two days.
  • Catch up with the Recap. Campaign → Handouts → Recap assembles what the table saw over the last 7–90 days: clues found, threads that moved, encounter outcomes, new handouts and the dice log — spoiler-free, so it never ruins a reveal.

Bringing an AI assistant

Sheetwright speaks MCP — an open standard that lets AI assistants use apps on your behalf. A connected assistant acts as you: it can build and play your characters and see exactly what you see, never more. Every action it takes is recorded to the campaign history like your own.

Set it up on your account page: Claude and ChatGPT sign in with your Sheetwright account, while other clients use an API key you create there. The same page carries step-by-step connector instructions.

What you see — and don't

The player view is spoiler-free by design. You see participants, zones, clocks and discoveries the GM has revealed, and table-safe results of everyone's actions. You don't see the GM's notes, NPC motivations, hidden clocks, exact enemy health or difficulties — and other players never see your exact pool spends. That's the same on the web, in Discord, and over MCP.
